Origin: The pastille has secular origins. It was created and introduced in France by an Italian confectioner: Florentin Jean Pastilla. This last followed Marie de Médicis when it came to France to marry Henri IV. The small candies which it made with all the perfumes (pink, violet, raspberry, vanilla, strawberry, mint, iris, eyelet, angelica, etc…) met a considerable success. With the XIX° century these candies knew an immense vogue. Certain cities were made specialities as with Turns of them for example. The imagination and the technique of the confectioners were unbounded. The pastilles are transparent or opaque. They are scented in thousand ways: flowers, fruits, alcohol even. To acidify them, the manufacturers add a little citric acid to the paste. Certain spa towns wanted to transmit to their pastille the virtues of their water. It was the case in Vichy. Today, one could not design Vichy without his pastilles. Those were born in the laboratory from the chemist Jean-Pierre-Joseph DARCET. He discovered the means of extracting the active ingredients from water of the station. The bicarbonate of soda used up to that point, could, after its discovery, being replaced by salts coming from thermal waters. In 1825 was manufactured, by a pharmacist of Vichy: Mr. Bartillat the first series of pastilles. Success was such as by 1830 this one produced 5 000 per day of them! It is only in 1833 that the brand “Pelletizes Vichy” was deposited by the new “farmers” of water-cure establishment who undertook to manufacture themselves these pastilles in the former convent of Célestins. In 1862 an Imperial decree recognizes the originality of famous the small pastilles thus contributing to reinforce the fame with it.
The manufacturing is traditional until 1954. The pastille were cut out then put to dry out of drying oven. Beyond this date, the paste passed in comprimeuse which gives to the pastilles their famous form and the low register of the punch of the brand.
